Epiphyllum ‘Ackermannii’
I obtained this epiphyllum as a small cutting from a friend a couple of years ago. I had kept it in the corner of my sunroom for a year or so where it was pretty neglected, but it used the time to put together a robust root system.
A New Life
When I potted it up into a mix of potting compost, sand and vermiculite, and put it in a hanging basket in my greenhouse, it really took off!!
This lovely epiphyllum put on substantial new growth almost immediately, and in only a few months it set its first blooms.
The Flowers Start to Form In Early July

The Blooms Swell and Begin to Unfurl

The Striking Red Flowers are Fully Open in August

This epiphyllum, and its cohabitants, has established extremely well in its new home and will be a permanent feature from now on. I intend to heat my greenhouse this winter and will see how things go. If it doesn’t enjoy the cooler British winter, I’m sure it will be back in my sunroom, but definitely not tucked away ion the same corner as it was before!
